Who we are
Digital Umuganda is an AI and open data company founded in 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda. We emerged to address a critical gap: the language divide, a barrier that excluded millions from the digital world.
We build language technology for African languages. Rather than simple translation, we create intelligent, adaptable systems that understand the subtleties of local languages.
Vision
A future where language is never an obstacle to opportunity.
Mission
We are dedicated to expanding access to information and services in underserved languages through the development of impactful digital tools.
Our objectives
- Democratising access to information — making health, education and government resources available in underserved languages through user-friendly interfaces and voice-enabled applications.
- Building open data infrastructure — creating open-source datasets and tools that empower local developers and researchers to build community-specific solutions.
- Enhancing language technology — advancing natural language processing for underserved languages, including voice data collection and AI model training.
- Supporting sustainable development — aligning our projects with national digital strategies and partnering with organisations such as GIZ and Mozilla.
Our team
We are a passionate confluence of African market experts and global innovators, combining deep understanding of local contexts with cutting-edge technical knowledge.
